Shure SM7B With Cloudlifter Unboxing, Setup with Zoom H6

One of the first steps in my mission to learn the voice over business is to get the right gear, so I'm starting with upgrading my microphones. In today's video, I'm unboxing and setting up my new Shure SM7B, along with (and without) a Cloudlifter.

The Shure SM7B is a legendary microphone, with a long history in the broadcast, blogging, and voice over world, so I thought that would be the best place to start.

Frankly, I'm not exactly happy with the results, so my next step will be to try to optimize my settings and figure out the best way to use it.

The Cloudlifter was almost obligatory. Just about everybody who uses an SM7B buys the CloudLifter at the same time because the SM7B needs a LOT of gain.

The SM7NB is a dynamic microphone, so it needs about 60 db of gain to work. The Cloudlifter adds about 20 db of clean gain, so you still need another 40db of gain, which should come from your recording device or audio interface.

In my case, I'm using a Zoom H6, and in this video you can see has just enough gain to use the SM7B WITHOUT the CloudLifter, but it needs you to put the gain all the way up, which adds a bit of unwanted hiss.

Once the CloudLifter is plugged in, the hiss is reduced a bit, and I'm able to use the SM7B with the gain at 50%, which theoretically means less hiss.

I'm in a noisy room, so one of the things I'm testing is the noise floor.

I've never been paid to do voice acting or narration but I'm learning right now and I thought it would be great if I shared what I learn, as I learn it. Why not follow along and learn together?
